Hiba Kalache

Hiba Kalache, an interdisciplinary artist, received her Masters of Fine Arts at the California College of the Art, in San Francisco, where she lived most of her life and acquired a diversified worldly exposure to Fine Arts in general and the North American approach in particular. She has recently relocated to Beirut. Her work is a series of explorations of the hand drawn image as well as the sculpted space, reflecting on the ways people process and filtrate memories, trauma, time and place.

The artist analyses and portrays in her work the various and complex influences of the private sphere and one’s definition of “home”, in parallel with one’s social belonging. She allows her immediate surroundings and routine to inform her process and concept, and she investigates personal narratives that are expressed through the qualities inherent in the food and other materials she utilizes such as butter, dough and cake icing.

She is interested in making art that leads the viewer into a specific relation, with both space and time, exploring new methods of engagement. Through her sculptures and site-specific installations, she works in relation to a particular place and stresses the dialogue engendered between site, audience and work.

Kalache is also one of the founding members of the Super Collective. She has exhibited in the 2008 Tehran Roaming International Biennial in Berlin and Istanbul, the Newcomb Art Gallery and Woldenberg Art Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the San Jose Museum of Art in California, in Oakland as well as San Francisco.
